At the beginning of the French and Indian War in 1755, a fort known as Fort Dobbs was constructed on the frontier boundary of North Carolina. Its purpose was for the safety of residents living all along the frontier of North Carolina. In the year 1760, the Cherokee made one unsuccessful attempt to attack the fort. Following the conclusion of the war, the railroad and new inhabitants rapidly moved west, leaving the fort in ruins by the year 1766. You can now take a guided tour inside the recreated block house to learn about the brief history of Fort Dobbs. The block house is now open to the public.

The cost of these tours is only $2 (or $1 for children between the ages of 5 and 12), and during them, tour guides will lead you through a reconstructed facsimile of the fort as it was when it was first erected. 2019 marked the end of this most recent rehabilitation project. Although the fort tours are the primary draw, the Fort Dobbs historic site also provides a wide range of other activities for guests to participate in during their time there. You will have the opportunity to see historical reenactments, go along a nature route that circles the fort complex, enjoy lunch at an outdoor picnic spot, and even arrange a special event. Last but not least, don't forget to spend some time in the visitor center.
