Sterne's Woods & FEN is a preserved forest in Crystal Lake, Illinois. It was added to the Illinois Nature Preserves in 1994, and now boasts a variety of hiking trails, biking trails, and picnic areas. Visitors can enjoy a hayride during the fall, go for a picnic, or simply enjoy the scenic views of this wetlands preserve.

Visitors can also experience the local farmers' market, which offers a variety of produce, flowers, and herbs. You can also purchase fresh baked goods, pet supplies, herbal cosmetics, and more. The Crystal Lake Park District began a multi-phase project in 2014 to restore the hydrology of Sterne's Fen. Phase II includes the removal of large dead or dying trees that pose a hazard to staff and volunteers. A detailed schedule of tree removal will be posted on the project's website in the future. At this time, it is hoped that the project will be completed in 2018.

In addition to the wooded park, you can visit the historic Palmer Mansion. This historic mansion was built in the mid-19th century and features Federalist and Greek Revival architecture. The house was once a home for two wealthy residents, Gustavus A. Palmer and Henrietta Palmer. Today, it is a National Register of Historic Places. It is one of the many attractions in Crystal Lake and the surrounding area.

Families can take a hike in the park or bike around the small lake. The wetlands have plenty of water activities, including a splash pad and sledding hill. The Crystal Lake Park District's Nature Center offers nature-oriented activities and programs, as well as a fossil collection, a habitat wall, and an aquarium for kids. Another great attraction is the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, which stretches 11.3 miles and is conveniently located near the city.
