Cornelius was founded in 1893 but wasn't incorporated as a city until March 4, 1905, making it the second youngest of Mecklenburg County's six incorporated cities. Many historians believe that a disagreement over the weighing of cotton led to the founding of the city. It has developed into a sizable suburb of Charlotte. In 2010, there were 24,866 people living there.
